FUNCTIONAL LABELS
An italic label indicating a part of speech or some other
functional classification follows the pronunciation or, if no
pronunciation is given, the main entry. Of the eight traditional
parts of speech, five appear in this dictionary as follows:
healthy . . . adjective
psy.cho.log.i.cal.ly. . . adverb
hos.pi.tal . . . noun
per . . . preposition
pre.scribe . . . verb
If a verb is both transitive and intransitive, the labels transitive verb and intransitive verb introduce the subdivisions:
op.er.ate . . . verb . . . intransitive verb : to perform surgery . . . transitive verb : to perform surgery on
If there is no subdivision, transitive verb or intransitive verb takes the place of verb:
med.i.cate . . . transitive verb
˛faint . . . intransitive verb
Other italicized labels used to indicate functional classifications that are not traditional parts of speech are:
| tid abbreviation | -i.a.sis... noun suffix |
| pleur- or pleuro- combining form | Rolf.ing . . . service mark |
| -poi.e.sis . . . noun combining form | Ca symbol |
| -poi.et.ic . . . adjective combining form | Val.ium . . . trademark |
| dys- prefix | sig.na . . . verb imperative |
| -lyt.ic ... adjective suffix |
Two functional labels are sometimes combined:
sap.phic . . . adjective or noun
cold tur.key . . . adverb or intransitive verb
