ABBREVIATIONS & SYMBOLS
Abbreviations and symbols for chemical elements are included as main entries in the vocabulary:

RQ abbreviation respiratory quotient

Al symbol aluminum

Abbreviations are usually entered without periods and have been normalized to one form of capitalization. In practice, however, there is considerable variation, and stylings other than those given in this dictionary are often acceptable.
