Brain Cancer Treatments:
Though brain cancer cases in the United States are on the rise, many exciting new treatments have been developed to help effectively eliminate brain cancer. At the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, advances in brain tumor treatments, including radiosurgery and tumor vaccines, are being used in conjunction with traditional methods to help cure brain cancer completely.
Cedars-Sinai is a leader in the field of radiosurgery, a brain cancer treatment in which a high dose of radiation is delivered to the tumor directly within the brain. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is the first medical facility on the West Coast to offer the Radionics ConforMAX Mini-Multileaf Collimator (MMLC) and Head and Neck Localizer (HNL). The use of this high-tech three-dimensional radiation device makes brain cancer treatments more effective by focusing radiation solely on the tumor while minimizing effects on the surrounding brain.
Cedars-Sinai is also a leader in cancer vaccine research. Vaccines for brain cancer work much like vaccines for other diseases, by stimulating the bodys natural defenses. Using cells generated from the patients tumor, doctors are able to create a vaccine that helps the patients immune system recognize and fight brain cancer cells.
Over 300 operations for brain cancer and other intracranial disorders are performed at the Center each year. Treatments are available for a broad spectrum of brain cancers and benign tumors including gliomas, astrocytomas, meningiomas, acoustic neuromas, medulloblastomas, metastatic tumors, and pituitary tumors. Our dedicated team of doctors assess each patient on an individual basis and help guide them through the brain cancer treatment process.
