Shlomo Melmed, MD

Director, Burns and Allen Research Institute
Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs

Shlomo Melmed, MD is Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of the Burns and Allen Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He holds the Helene A. and Philip E. Hixon Endowed Chair in Investigative Medicine and is also Professor and Associate Dean of the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Melmed has been consistently listed in Best Doctors of America. He is a recipient of the Endocrinology Medal of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Neuroendocrinology Award of McGill University and the Pituitary Society's Award for Contributions to Understanding Pituitary Disease. Dr. Melmed pioneered novel medical management strategies for pituitary tumors. His research is devoted to studying endocrine aspects of pituitary neoplasia, molecular pathogenesis and treatment of pituitary tumors and growth factor regulation of anterior pituitary function.

Dr. Melmed has written more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and more than 50 book chapters, monographs and reviews. He is the editor of several textbooks, including The Pituitary. Dr. Melmed is a co-editor of Endocrinology: Basic and Clinical Principals and the neuroendocrine section editor for DeGroot's Textbook of Endocrinology, William's Textbook of Endocrinology and Harrison's Textbook of Medicine. Dr. Melmed is Editor-in-Chief of the periodical, Pituitary, and he serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Investigation and Endocrine Pathology. He recently completed a five-year tenure as Editor-in-Chief of Endocrinology.

Dr. Melmed served on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Endocrinology Study Section and has chaired special endocrinology study sections. He is currently a member of the Council of the Pituitary Society and chairs its Program Committee. Dr. Melmed is an elected member of the Endocrine Society Council. He is presently the President of the International Society of Endocrinology until 2008 and a member of the Executive Board Committee, Program Chair of the International Congress of Endocrinology, 2004, and a Director of the Association of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP). He is a past member of several Endocrine Society committees, including the Committee for the International Society of Endocrinology, and has served on the Legislative Assembly, UCLA Academic Senate.

Dr. Melmed is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, certified in Endocrinology and Metabolism and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. He is also an elected member of the Association of American Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Melmed received his bachelor's degree from the University of Cape Town and his medical degree from the University of Cape Town School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Sheba Medical Center in Israel and a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Medical Center, UCLA School of Medicine.
