CT of Cervical, Thoracic and/or Lumbar Spine

A CT of the spine, whether it is cervical (neck), thoracic (chest or upper back) or lumbar (lower back) is a dedicated study of the bones (and spinal cord) of the spine. Generally, only the soft tissues immediately surrounding the spine are included in the study.

Indications

An excellent study to study the osseous structures of the spine. These tests are indicated for:

  • Spinal trauma
  • Spinal tumors involving the bones
  • Infections of the spine and adjacent (paraspinal) soft tissues

Contrast

May be indicated. A dose of 50-100 cc of non-ionic contrast will be given if indicated.

 Preparation

 Without Contrast:

 No preparation is required.

 With Contrast:

  • Only one CT contrast study should be scheduled within a 48 hour period.
  • BUN and creatinine must be done within 72 hours of the scan.
  • Nothing but clear liquid after midnight before the scan.
  • NPO four hours prior to exam (no food or drink).
Anesthesia

 Generally not required, but may be indicated depending on the patient. Anesthesia on these studies always needs to be authorized by a radiologist.
