Dr. Alfano and Ms. Haug are investigating how strokes in different brain areas affect awareness of deficits in ability. They are examining behavior, emotions, and thinking from the viewpoint of the patient, family or significant other, and rehabilitation therapist. These observations and ratings are being related to objective performance on neuropyschological tests. Participants are persons suffering a recent stroke or from a comparison group of similar persons without stroke or neurological disease. the research team hopes to shed some light on how the human mind integrates information from throughout the brain to create a concept of awareness.
