General Preparation for Radiology Exam (X-Ray or Fluoroscope)

Upper GI (exam time: 30-120 minutes)

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight including gum, mints or cigarettes.

Upper GI with Small Bowel Study (exam time may take up to three hours or longer)

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight including gum, mints or cigarettes.

Barium Enema (exam time: 60 min)

  • Use Fleet Enema Kit # 3 from your local drug store. Follow "24-hr prep" instructions.

IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram; kidney X-ray) (exam time: 60 min)

  • Use Fleet Enema Kit # 3 from your local drug store. Follow "24-hr prep" instructions.

Hystersalpingogram (exam time: 60 min)

  • Schedule five to 10 days from first day of the menstrual cycle.
  • No unprotected sexual intercourse from first day of cycle until after the exam.

Esophagram (exam time: 45 min)

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
