After Coronary Interventional Procedures

After you have had a coronary interventional procedure, the catheters are usually removed from your groin immediately after the procedure or later back in your room. After the catheter has been removed, direct pressure will be applied to the insertion site for about 20 to stop any bleeding. In some cases, a device is used to seal the incision site to help stop the bleeding and to shorten the amount of time you need to lie still to recover. Most likely you will go to a monitored unit overnight.

Total bed rest is needed after the procedure. You will need to lie still for up to six hours before getting up. The most important thing to remember is not to bend the leg where the puncture site is.

  • You must use the urinal or bedpan for elimination until the doctor allows you to get up.
  • If you sneeze or cough, press your fingers over the groin area.
  • The nurse will check your vital signs and the insertion site frequently.

Caution - notify the nurse immediately, if you feel:

  • Sudden pain at the site
  • Sensations of warm fluid on the affected leg. Pressure will be reapplied for as long as needed to stop the bleeding.

After discharge from the Medical Center:

  • Rest for two days after discharge.
  • Do not lift heavy objects for two weeks.
  • Do not bend from the waist. Avoid strenuous exercise (any activity that makes you break into a sweat).
  • You may drive the day after you come home.
  • Avoid straining during bowel movements.
  • Talk to your doctor about when to return to work.
  • You may shower the day after discharge. However, you must avoid tub baths, swimming or using a Jacuzzi or sauna for one week.

You may remove the bandage or dressing from the groin and wash the area with soap and water. Pat dry.
