
David Balfe, MD is Medical Director of the Pulmonary Step Down Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and an attending physician in the Division of Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Balfe is also an Assistant Professor at the University of California Los Angeles.
Dr. Balfe's main clinical and research interests include the process of weaning patients from mechanical ventilation, pulmonary function and exercise testing, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and sepsis.
Dr. Balfe has authored and co-authored numerous articles for peer-reviewed publications, including "Grading the Severity of Obstruction in the Presence of a Restrictive Ventilatory Defect" for Chest. He also recently authored a chapter on sepsis for Practical Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Balfe received his bachelor's and medical degrees from The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed his internal medicine residency at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa and his pulmonary/critical care fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
