The role of these procedures is to evaluate your breast tissue for any abnormalities including cysts or other benign abnormalities and malignancy. A screening mammogram is for women who do not have any symptoms such as lumps or discharge.
The imaging physician will need to compare your previous mammograms, if you have them, to your new ones. Please bring any previous mammogram films with you on the day of exam.
Your breasts may be sensitive during your menstrual cycle. We suggest that you do not schedule your mammogram in the week prior to your menstrual cycle.
Please do not wear deodorant or talcum powder on the day of your exam.
The first step will be to complete a "Breast Imaging Questionnaire". The technologist will review this information with you. In a private dressing room, you will remove your clothes from the waist up and put on a gown for modesty. During the exam, two pictures of each breast will be taken. The pictures are taken while compressing your breast. The compression may be uncomfortable, but is essential to obtain quality pictures.
Your exam will take approximately 45 minutes. Afterwards, the technologist will check the films and let you know when you may go home.
There are no post-exam instructions.
An imaging physician specialist will review your study. The results will be sent to your doctor and you will receive a follow-up letter as well. Your doctor will discuss your results with you and explain what they mean.
Please note: The imaging physician may call you back for additional pictures. There is no reason to worry if we request more images. Sometimes a mammogram is not clear and another one, or an ultrasound, is necessary.
We want to make your waiting time as pleasant as possible. Although we do not anticipate a delay in your scheduled appointment, consider bringing your favorite magazine, book or radio with headphones to help you pass the time should an unanticipated delay occur.
