Multiple Myeloma and Bone Metastases Programs

The Multiple Myeloma and Bone Metastases Programs at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center provide a valuable resource to patients with these conditions. The programs offer a comprehensive array of services and treatment options based on the specific challenges of each patient's disease characteristics and stage. Through the programs' clinical trials, patients with multiple myeloma can access leading-edge, novel therapeutics. The clinical trials are complemented by the programs' basic and translational research in several promising areas, including anti-angiogenesis, vaccines, anti-virus treatments, gene therapy and third-generation bisphosphonates.

Our Multidisciplinary Team of Experts

Led by Robert Vescio, MD, the Multiple Myeloma and Bone Metastasis Programs address the needs of myeloma patients by providing a comprehensive approach to patient care in a compassionate, caring environment. Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan from a coordinated, multidisciplinary expert team that includes specialists in:

  • Medical oncology
  • Radiation oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Rehabilitation
  • Pain management
  • Pharmacy
  • Social work and psychosocial services
  • Treatments and Services

The Multiple Myeloma and Bone Metastases Programs offer:

  • Diagnostics
  • Chemotherapy treatment programs
  • Surgery
  • Radiation therapy
  • Plasmapheresis
  • Access to clinical trials
  • Peripheral blood stem cell transplant
  • Bisphosphonate treatment
  • Erythropoietin
  • Pain and symptom management
  • Rehabilitation
  • Patient support services
  • The programs also offer various treatment options for active myeloma, most aimed at stabilizing the disease and increasing survival rates and duration, giving the patient an improved quality of life.

In treating bone metastasis, the programs' primary goals are pain relief and bone stabilization because bone fractures and pain are the primary manifestations. An important secondary goal is to retard further progression of the cancer itself. Currently, standard therapeutic intervention for bone metastasis includes:

    • Radiation therapy (primarily for local pain control and bone stabilization)
    • Bisphosphonates (to increase bone strength by restoring the critical balance between bone destruction and bone formation)
    • Surgery (for regional stabilization of weak bony areas by rod or cement placement or both)
