Babak Larian, MD

Director, Head and Neck Cancer Center

Babak Larian, MD is the Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Center at Cedars-Sinai. He is also a otolaryngologist at the Cedars-Sinai Thyroid Cancer Center. Dr. Larian is also an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California , Los Angeles (UCLA). As the Director of the Head and Neck Tumor Board, Dr. Larian reviews complex head and neck cancer cases with a multidisciplinary panel of experts. Together they develop a comprehensive treatment plan for each patient's unique condition.

Dr. Larian has extensive experience in treatment of all head and neck cancers, including complex advanced tumors, skull base tumors and recurrent cancers. He has expertise in minimally invasive image-guided surgical approaches, minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, endoscopic laser laryngeal surgery and endoscopic treatment of Zenker's diverticulum. Dr. Larian puts a special emphasis on treatment options that take into account form and function, and he carefully plans reconstructive and facial reanimation procedures to optimize speech, swallowing, facial movement and appearance.

Dr. Larian has served as a member of the editorial review panel for several peer-reviewed journals, and he has published in a number of scientific journals, including Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Trauma, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery and Head and Neck Surgery. He offers presentations at professional symposia and academic meetings, nationally and internationally, on a variety of subjects, including head and neck cancers, thyroid and parathyroid disorders, facial nerve disorders and rehabilitation, and voice disorders.

Dr. Larian's interest has focused on innovative techniques and treatment modalities that offer his patients the greatest outcomes while minimizing risk and morbidity. Dr. Larian studied the efficacy of alternative and adjunctive treatments for various thyroid tumors on a cellular level. He has also investigated nasal cavity and anterior skull base tumors, the various surgical approaches and the role of adjuvant treatments.

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Larian has been involved in several humanitarian causes. He travels to developing countries, such as rural Guatemala and Ecuador, to treat children and adults with complex head and neck disorders.

Dr. Larian received his medical degree from the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, where he was recognized for academic and humanitarian distinction. He completed a residency in head and neck surgery at UCLA Medical Center. He is a board certified diplomat of the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery as well as a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Head and Neck Society.
