With the number of hospital trauma centers in the Los Angeles area decreasing sharply in recent years, Cedars-Sinai's state-of-the-art, 32-bed Ruth and Harry Roman Emergency Department, which includes the four-bed Marcia Israel Trauma Center, is even more valuable to the community.
Treating more than 77,000 emergency patients a year, 1,300 of whom need trauma services, Cedars-Sinai is Los Angeles County's only private hospital with a Level I Trauma Center and a designated Pediatric Critical Care Center.
The 9,000 children who come to the Emergency Department each year find themselves in a child-friendly environment with storybook murals, a hand-painted table and chairs and a castle tower that contains a TV. Because it's scary enough just being sick or hurt and having to go to a hospital, the pediatric Emergency Department is designed to reduce apprehension as much as possible, even in the treatment rooms.
Located away from the adult Emergency Department area, this area insulates kids from unnecessary noise and commotion. Treatment rooms and a designated trauma bay are specially designed for youngsters. Each patient room is private with soundproof walls, a TV, a telephone and accommodations for a visitor. Many young children receive a teddy bear to give them support in an unhappy time.
