Every three years, the Medical Center conducts a thorough assessment of community needs. The resulting Community Health Initiatives seek to address the unmet health needs identified by the community needs assessment. Based on our findings, the following are Cedars-Sinai's Community Health Initiatives:
The Community Health Initiatives are under the guidance and direction of the Community Benefit Committee, which is a function of our Board of Directors, and the Department of Community Health and Education.
The Maternal and Child Health Initiative improves health and quality of life for pregnant women and young children. Through Prematurity Awareness Day, community awareness of the prevention, health risks and signs of premature birth, is increased.
The School-Based Health Initiative promotes healthy eating and physical activity among elementary school children in the Los Angeles Unified School District by increasing access to health services. "Healthy Habits" is a fun and interactive program that gets kids excited about healthy eating and physical activity. Activities are implemented in the classroom, at school events and parent meetings.
The Senior Health Initiative provides education, screening and referrals for common diseases in older adults through collaboration with community-based organizations and providers. The Medical Center provides free lectures throughout the community, implements comprehensive screening programs for health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and offers vaccinations against influenza and pneumonia. In addition, mental health education, screening and referrals are provided to the community.
