Disorders of androgen excess (i.e., excessive male hormones), including the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), are frequently inherited. The chance is 30 to 50% for a family member of a patient with androgen excess to have that same disorder.

Some of our research studies are designed to determine whether family members of patients with PCOS have similar problems, and if there is a pattern of inheritance. Other research protocols involve investigations of insulin resistance and the diagnosis and treatment of androgen-excess disorders.

If you participate in a research study at the Center for Androgen-Related Disorders, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire, undergo a brief physical exam and give blood for hormonal analysis and DNA. The Center for Androgen-Related Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is conducting a research study that involves screening for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

It is estimated that approximately one in 15 women have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS can experience increased body hair (called hirsutism) or irregular periods. In addition, women with PCOS are at increased risk for diabetes and other health problems.

At Cedars-Sinai, our physicians are actively evaluating new ways of diagnosing and treating this potentially devastating condition. We are conducting a screening program designed to determine if a woman has PCOS.

If you are a woman who is 14-45 years old, and have (1) infrequent or irregular menstrual cycles OR (2) excess unwanted hair growth.

You can call to see if you qualify for this study by answering a few questions by telephone. If you are eligible for the study, you will be invited to come into the office for further evaluation for PCOS at no cost and you may receive information about opportunities to participate in other studies related to women's hormones or PCOS. If you are not eligible for this study, you may be advised to speak with your regular physician.

The Center for Androgen-Related Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is conducting a research study to understand hormone levels in women. We need women to volunteer for this research study who are:

• Healthy
• Between the ages of 18 and 45
• Not currently taking birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy
• Willing to come to Cedars-Sinai for a one time blood draw (with the option for further involvement)

The Center for Androgen-Related Disorders at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is conducting a research study to understand how certain medications work to control excess male hormone levels in women. To participate, you should:

• Have irregular periods, or excess hair growth, or both
• Have been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome
• Be between the ages of 18 and 40 years
• Be willing to come to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a one time blood draw and exam (with the option for further involvement)
