Fellowship programs are offered in several areas of pathology, including:
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year accredited fellowship in hematopathology.
The Hematology Laboratory performs a large volume of tests, including extensive special coagulation and special hematology procedures. There is abundant hematopathology material with more than 1,100 bone marrow samples and adult and pediatric lymphoma cases each year. Training includes extensive experience in flow cytometry, immunophenotyping, immunoperoxidase techniques and molecular biology. The program is affiliated with the hematopathology program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
To qualify as a fellow for this program, candidates must have completed four years of anatomic and clinical pathology in an approved residency program or three years of a clinical pathology residency. California licensure is required at the time of appointment. Stipends are commensurate with the applicant's year of postgraduate training.

The one-year fellowship in surgical pathology offered at Cedars-Sinai emphasizes general surgical pathology with graduated responsibility as the fellow assumes a front-line role performing frozen section and microscopic readouts. The fellow gains expertise through review of in-house and outside consultation cases and by teaching junior residents. Fellows present at inter- and intradepartmental conferences. Involvement in ongoing research is required. There are two months of electives during the fellowship, and fellows are encouraged to use these to subspecialize in an area of surgical pathology.
Applicants must be eligible for California licensure and have at least two years of anatomic pathology in an approved residency program. Board eligibility is preferred. Stipends are commensurate with the applicant's level of training.

The renal biopsy service at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center accessions in excess of 2500 kidney biopsies per year for comprehensive evaluation by sophisticated light microscopy, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Approximately 8% of the biopsies are performed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; the remainder are referred from outside institutions from several of the western states. Roughly 20% of the total are transplant biopsies and the others are a mixture of adult (predominantly) and pediatric biopsies. Virtually every structural disease of the kidney is encountered during the course of a year. In addition to the usual manners of evaluating the specimens, many immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization techniques are available from the busy and experienced immunopathology laboratory in the Department of Pathology.
During the year of fellowship, the fellow will be instructed in depth and detail concerning diagnostic renal pathology and will, if the skill is not known beforehand, become skilled in electron microscopy and evaluation of specimens by immunofluorescence. The fellow initially will be oriented and instructed in the diagnostic procedures and, with time, will be expected to work reasonably independently, including communications with the referring nephrologists.
The renal biopsy service is involved with several renal pathology conferences each month. These conferences are of a working nature and make use of current biopsy material for presentation. The fellow will be expected to present at these conferences and discuss the entities with knowledge and authority.
During the course of the year, the fellow will be expected to participate in at least one or two investigative projects, largely dealing with biopsy material. These activities ideally will lead to one or more presentations at national meetings and/or publications.
The faculty in the division of renal pathology consists of Arthur H. Cohen, M.D., Cynthia C. Nast, M.D. and Dean Wallace, M.D., all having extensive experience in diagnostic renal pathology, a record of significant publications in the field of nephrology and renal pathology, ongoing research activities in these areas, and considerable involvement in the four organizations with direct involvement in Renal Pathology: American Society of Nephrology, United States-Canadian Academy of Pathology, International Society of Nephrology and Renal Pathology Society.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in genitourinary pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center under the direction of Dr. Mahul Amin. Cedars-Sinai, a 877-bed hospital with approximately 2000 affiliated physicians, is one of the leading hospitals in California for clinical care and quality. It houses the Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center and is a large referral center for outreach prostate biopsies. Its Minimally Invasive Urology Institute is a leader in endoscopic and laparoscopic management of neoplasms and medical diseases of the genitourinary tract. The case material is further enhanced by Dr. Amin's extramural consultation practice. Dr. Amin has been directing one of the few Genitourinary Pathology fellowships since 1997 and at Cedars-Sinai will be assisted by Dr. Daniel Luthringer, senior pathologist and active member of the Louis Warschaw Prostate Cancer Center.
The fellow will be provided with comprehensive training in diagnostic genitourinary pathology and given graduated responsibility for signing out cases including consultation cases. The fellow is expected to become involved in ongoing clinical and, depending on career interests, in basis science research in the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Urology, including initiation and completion of at least one research project during the course of the year. Available diagnostic and research techniques include immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and other contemporary molecular techniques. The fellow also will participate in the integrated urologic conferences and education of pathology and urology residents.
Requirements: M.D. Degree, Previous residency training in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
