Pathology is an exciting specialty of medicine that has long offered a wide range of subspecialties, including surgical pathology, cytopathology, clinical chemistry, forensics, hematopathology, microbiology, informatics and transfusion medicine. For the past decade, pathology has been incorporating the tools of molecular biology into the diagnostic armamentarium, and molecular pathology has emerged as a distinct discipline. Molecular medicine greatly amplifies our ability to study and diagnose a broad range of disorders, making pathology an even more stimulating field of study.
Pathology is one of the few disciplines of medicine in which you can utilize a wide variety of scientific instruments and technologic approaches to study and understand disease. Pathology continues to thrive as one of the best fields in which you can combine opportunities for vital patient-care activities with sophisticated technology, while also serving as an educator for peers and other members of the healthcare team. The field of pathology affords opportunities for participation in a wide variety of research endeavors. Additionally, pathologists remain the guardians of the quality of healthcare.
The highly specialized Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center offers the invaluable experience of studying the tertiary and quaternary care patients of an 877-bed major metropolitan teaching hospital. The most sophisticated equipment is directed toward solving the most challenging of diagnostic and patient care problems. Our department is renowned for its expertise, outstanding educational activities and research.
Our residency program prepares the young pathologist for the general practice of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology while providing a strong foundation for developing expertise in subspecialty areas of pathology and an academic career. Our graduates successfully compete for fellowship positions at major centers through the country, as well as for some of the most desirable staff positions in the region. Graduates of our program are at academic centers and in community settings. Our educational and research activities are superb. We were one of the first medical centers in the country to perform polymerase chain reaction for diagnostic purposes and have a busy molecular testing laboratory. Our residents participate actively in research activities and have been recognized for the number of submitted abstracts to the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology for the past two years.
We encourage you to visit our department and meet our faculty and housestaff members. We look forward to the opportunity to have you learn more about us.
