The Surgical Oncology Fellowship training program is designed according to the guidelines of the Society of Surgical Oncology. The unique nature of this program is that it is conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a major tertiary and quaternary referral center that does not have training programs in surgical subspecialties. Thus, the fellow will receive strong training in these areas where there are currently no trainees within the institution.
The program includes 18 months of clinical rotations and six months of basic science research. The clinical portion of the program is heavily weighted toward the strengths of the institution, focusing on breast cancer care (through the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center), complex gastrointestinal malignancies, and thoracic oncology (through the Cedars-Sinai Lung Center). The clinical rotations include eight months on a busy general/thoracic service, and rotations in urologic oncology, head and neck oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical pathology, rehabilitation medicine, and hepatobiliary surgery. There are opportunities to individualize the program. The program emphasizes coordinated multidisciplinary care, involving the trainee in all aspects of patient management.
The program includes six months of basic science research to follow the 18-month clinical training portion of the program. Research will be conducted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in the laboratories of the Department of Surgery or other cooperating departments. Collaborative opportunities are widely available with scientists in the Center for Women's Health (Breast Cancer) and the Division of Medical Oncology. A number of superbly equipped core facilities are available including animal care, flow cytometry, and DNA sequencing.
