Pharmacy Administration - Second-Year Specialized Residency

The Pharmacy Administrative Residency Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is designed to provide the resident with insight into key issues confronting the practice of pharmacy. Training is provided in various aspects of pharmacy management with emphasis on independent thinking and application of management concepts in the development of progressive pharmacy services.

The length of the residency program is one year starting on July 1. Experiences and areas of focus include:

  • Strategic planning
  • Identification of pharmacy's role across the continuum of care
  • Medication safety
  • Pharmacy operations
  • Fiscal management
  • Management of therapeutic advances and drug budget forecasting
  • Demonstrating the value of pharmacy services
  • Participation in medical staff committees and interdisciplinary committees
  • Human resources management: Interviewing, recruitment, retention and performance
  • Performance improvement
  • Development of evidence-based medication guidelines
  • Special projects
  • Precepting first year residents and fourth year pharmacy students
  • Introduction to clinical practice and inpatient drug distribution
The resident will assume staffing and clinical responsibilities approximately four days a month. Additionally, the resident will assume the responsibility of department administrator once every four to six weeks.

Residency Project

The resident is required to complete a major project before the end of his or her residency. The project should be suitable for publication and will be presented to Department of Pharmacy Services and at a professional meeting.

Requirements

The applicant must be graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy and have completed a first year pharmacy practice or primary care residency or possess equivalent experience. Candidates must be eligible to be licensed in California and the resident is expected to be licensed midway through the program.

Benefits

Benefits include 26 days of paid time off, 10 of which are used for educational leave and medical and dental insurance.
