The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine has an approved three-year training program. The purpose of the program is to provide an environment of scholarship that will enable the fellow to achieve a consultant's stature in maternal-fetal medicine.
The fellowship is divided into monthly rotations of clinical work or research that addresses the objectives set forth by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Board. The overall fellowship is guided by the members of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, who have special interests in prenatal diagnosis, genetics, infectious diseases, ultrasound, critical care and diabetes management, hypertension in pregnancy and preterm labor research. The specific clinical genetics portion of the fellowship is supervised by the members of the Genetics Division at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, whose many grants include the Human Genome Project, collagen diseases, hemoglobinopathies, skeletal dysplasias and fetal dysmorphology. The research component of the fellowship can be basic research and/or a clinical project that is designed to integrate the fellow's interest in maternal-fetal medicine and will result in a manuscript for publication in a peer review journal.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center provides a referral service for high-risk pregnancies in the Los Angeles area. Annually, there are approximately 7,000 deliveries and 1,300 high-risk patients are evaluated by the antepartum testing unit, and over 4,000 patients are evaluated in the Prenatal Diagnosis Center.
