Internal Medicine Residency Training Program Didactic Sessions

A series of lectures and conferences is an essential component of the educational experience for residents in our training program. Both Cedars-Sinai and the Veteran's Administration (VA) have multiple formal didactic series that will be fully coordinated next year.

Each academic year begins with a series of daily lectures covering emergency situations residents are likely to encounter in internal medicine.
This series lasts about two months and is followed by a group of lectures that are part of a didactic curriculum. These lectures include a daily noon conference, which takes a variety of formats including internal medicine subspecialty lectures, morbidity and mortality conferences, and CPCs. Additionally, an evidence-based medicine journal club and senior resident Grand Rounds are scheduled twice a month. Internal Medicine Grand Rounds are held Friday morning at Cedars-Sinai and Wednesday at the VA, and bring in both local and national experts to discuss cutting-edge clinical and basic science research, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic management of common medical problems.

During the last months of the academic year, a review course for the ABIM certifying examination is set up by the chief medical residents and attended by everyone in the training program.

Daily morning reports are structured into all inpatient services. Either the internal medicine chief residents or the full-time faculty runs these sessions on the respective inpatient services. Chief of Medicine rounds are held where the Chairman of the Department of Medicine or his or her delegate discuss a clinical case with house staff on the medical ward services. Additionally, there are weekly inpatient dermatology sessions alternating with autopsy conferences for house staff during their rotation at Cedars-Sinai.

Teaching attending rounds are held daily on all inpatient services (ward or ICU). Each subspecialty service has inpatient rounds at least several times each week and has its own conferences scheduled on a regular basis.
