Purpose of Study

The main objective of this study is to establish a database of information derived from demographic, clinical, outcome data and scan results from patients coming to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for coronary calcium screening by CT (an assessment of atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries of the heart). The database is used to perform research analyses, such as studying how coronary calcium screening can be used to determine which patients are at higher risk for adverse outcomes so that physicians can prescribe the best course of treatment or further evaluation.

Eligibility Requirements

Any patient having coronary calcium screening can participate in this study. The goal is to have information from all types of patients (representing all ages, men and women, healthy and very sick patients) so that what we learn from this study can be applied back to all those types of people.

Research Procedures

By participating in the study, participants:

  • Allow us to use the information listed above for research
  • Allow us to review their medical records to review information that is relevant to their heart health (e.g., we might need to look at medical records if a heart attack was reported.)
  • Will be contacted for a follow-up questionnaire to get an update on your health status
The short follow-up questionnaire has questions asking about current health status and whether or not one had certain heart problems (such as a heart attack) and/or treatments on one's heart (such as bypass surgery). Patients may be contacted by mail or telephone one to three times over a 10-year period but most patients are contacted only once about three to five years after the scan.
