EISNER Study 1:

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Community

IRB Number: 3351

IRB Expiration Date: 07/31/2009

Purpose of Study

The primary purpose of this study is to determine if a particular combination of assessments (medical history and risk factor information, clinical and biochemical tests, and a cardiac CT scan) can predict future clinical outcomes (e.g., progression of atherosclerosis, heart surgery) in patients who have had no symptoms of coronary artery disease or other heart disease.

Eligibility Requirements

Patients who have no known history of heart disease and be at least 55 years old if female, 45 years old if male.

Research Procedures

Participating in the study involves the following procedures:

  • A baseline questionnaire about your medical history, current health status, dietary and lifestyle
  • Clinical exam where vital signs and body measurements such as weight, height and waist are measured
  • A fasting blood draw that will be used for cholesterol and glucose testing, as well as future analysis
  • A cardiac CT scan that measures the amount of coronary calcification or atherosclerotic plaque burden you have in your coronary arteries. You will receive a copy of the scan report. Participants randomized into the treatment group will have this scan at both baseline and Year 4; the placebo group will have this scan only at Year 4
  • Annual follow-up questionnaires from Year 1 until Year 4 of when you enrolled in the study
  • A follow-up clinic visit at Year 4, which includes a clinical exam, fasting blood draw and cardiac CT scan.

Study Status

This study is currently in the follow-up phase and is no longer enrolling new participants.
