Neurofibromatosis

Neurofibromatosis is a disorder characterized by abnormal skin pigmentation, internal and external tumor formation and growth abnormalities. It affects about one out of every 3,000 people in the U.S.

Neurofibromatosis can be mildly disfiguring, severely disabling or may even go undetected. Common problems can include brown spots on the skin, benign tumors under the skin, other types of brain growths, learning problems, bony defects and curvature of the spine. Proper diagnosis can help to prevent or lessen the impact of many of these problems.

Cedars-Sinai provides diagnostic, management and counseling services for all patients with neurofibromatosis and other neurogenetic disorders. Cedars-Sinai also sponsors meetings of local chapters of support groups.
