Shien-Fong Lin, PhD

Research Scientist

Shien-Fong Lin, PhD is a research scientist in the Department of Cardiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is also an associate professor in residence in the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Prior to joining Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Lin was a research assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and a research engineer at the Chicago Institute of NeuroSurgery and NeuroResearch at Columbus Hospital in Chicago.

Dr. Lin's research interests have focused on cardiac electrophysiology with an emphasis on mechanisms of ventricular defibrillation and the development of new treatment protocols. He is an expert in the development and application of cardiac optical mapping for measuring electrical activity in the heart. As a consultant, he has assisted numerous research institutions in setting up optical mapping systems. He has been the principal investigator for research projects supported by the Whitaker Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. In 1998, he won first prize in the North American Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (NASPE) Young Investigator's Competition with the discovery of a peculiar reentrant pattern in ventricles.

Dr. Lin is a member of NASPE and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has published many articles in leading journals, such as Circulation Research, Circulation and the American Journal of Physiology. He has also served as reviewer for cardiac and engineering journals. As a mentor, Dr. Lin sponsors postdoctoral trainees in arrhythmia research using the cardiac optical mapping system.

Dr. Lin received his bachelor's degree in communication engineering from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan. He received his master's and doctorate degrees in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University in Chicago. He completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Physiology at Northwestern University.
