Research at Cedars-Sinai is conducted by attending physicians, and PhDs in biomedical or related sciences, as well as medical doctors employed by the medical center who have faculty appointments at the University of California's medical schools. Many of these researchers and research scientists are internationally renowned for their contributions to the knowledge and practice of medicine. They come to Cedars-Sinai from across the nation as well as around the world. Among these luminaries are: Keith Black, MD, Neurosurgery, and Director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute who appeared on the cover of Time Magazine and was recognized as one of its "Heroes of Medicine"; Carole Hurvitz, MD, FAAP, Pediatric Oncology, a collaborator with the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Oncology Group in the development of novel treatments for children with cancer; Dan Berman, MD, Cardiology, designated as one of the nation's top 100 doctors in a survey conducted by Newsweek; Julie R. Korenberg, MD, PhD, Medical Genetics, a participant in the National Institutes of Health Human Genome Project; and P.K. Shah, MD, Cardiology, who has appeared on numerous broadcast television programs to discuss his investigation into the role of the AP Milano gene in cholesterol.
