John L. Reeves II, PhD, MSCP, ABPP

Health Psychologist

John L. Reeves II, PhD, MSCP, ABPP is an attending physician at The Pain Center at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Reeves is also an adjunct professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry, Section of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain. He previously served as a director of medical psychology at UCLA's Pain Management Center and as an associate professor of anesthesiology.

Licensed in psychology in both California and Oregon, Dr. Reeves specializes in psychopharmacology and behavioral pain management, focusing primarily on presurgical psychological evaluations and psychological preparation for surgery. His primary research interest has been the investigation of cognitive and psychophysiological processes in pain perception. He has been awarded research grants from the American Cancer Society, National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and National Institute of Dental Research.

Dr. Reeves has published scientific research and lectured on the topics of psychological/ pyschophysiological factors in pain and surgery. He is the co-author of Preparing for Surgery: A Mind-Body Approach to Enhance Healing and Recovery, which won the Small Publisher's Award for Health and Medicine in 1998. In 1996 he was co-recipient of the National Cancer Pain Initiatives "Special Recognition for Contributions to Cancer Pain Management."

Dr. Reeves is board certified in health psychology. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology and a fellow of the American Academy of Clinical Health Psychology. He is also a former president of the American Pain Society (1990-1991).

Dr. Reeves received his doctorate in experimental psychology (psychobiology) from Texas Tech University. He was a National Institutes of Mental Health postdoctoral scholar in psychophysiology and psychopharmacology at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute. He also holds a postdoctoral master's degree in clinical psychopharmacology from Alliant International University.
