Chest X-rays are done to evaluate the heart and lungs. This procedure may be performed as part of a routine physical or to assess pneumonia, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis or other heart or lung conditions.
One to four images of the chest may be taken. For the first image, the patient stands facing the chest unit. The second image is taken from the side. In some cases, images of the chest may be taken as the patient lies on his or her side or back facing the chest unit. The procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes.
