

Stephan R. Targan, MD is Director of both the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and the Division of Gastroenterology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Targan is Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and is holder of the Feintech Family Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Cedars-Sinai.
Board certified in internal medicine, gastroenterology and infectious disease, Dr. Targan has been awarded investigative grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, as well as research contracts with numerous industry sponsors. His research has primarily focused on the genetic and immunopathologic mechanisms of inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Targan is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association, American Association of Physicians and American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has written extensively for such peer-reviewed publications as the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Immunology and Gastroenterology. Dr. Targan has also written numerous book chapters on the causes, effects and treatments of inflammatory bowel disease. He is the editor of the widely acclaimed textbook Inflammatory Bowel Disease: From Bench to Bedside.
Dr. Targan received his bachelor's and medical degrees from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He completed his internship and residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, as well as a fellowship in infectious diseases. Dr. Targan also completed fellowships in gastroenterology and immunology at UCLA Medical Center.
