Duodenal Drainage

This test analyzes bile from the gallbladder. The collected bile is examined under a microscope for cholesterol crystals. These can indicate the possibility of gallstones. The most common uses for this test are to:

  • Check for cholesterol crystals from gallbladder bile
  • Identify parasites (giardia lambia and strongyloides)

To prepare for this test:
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight (If you are diabetic, please talk with your primary care doctor)
  • You may take scheduled medications at least 2 hours prior to the study with small sips of water
