The purpose of antroduodenal manometry is to measure pressures in the stomach and small intestines before and after you eat. The measurements provide specific information on how your stomach and small intestines are working. The most common problems studied are:
- Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth
- Dyspepsia (painful digestion)
- Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, in which the symptoms and signs of an intestinal obstruction are present, yet there is no evidence of mechanical blockage
- Prediction of drug effect
- Systemic diseases affecting GI motility (e.g., diabetes mellitus and progressive systemic sclerosis)
- Gastroparesis (stomach paralysis)
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight (If you are diabetic, please talk to your primary care doctor)
- You may take scheduled medications at least two hours prior to the study with small sips of water
- You may brush your teeth
