

Basil Rapoport, MD, is Director of the Autoimmune Disease Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Rapoport is also a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) School of Medicine.
Board certified in internal medicine with a subspecialty in endocrinology and metabolism, Dr. Rapoport previously headed the Thyroid Molecular Biology Research Unit at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He also served as the Visiting Professor from the United States to the Royal Society of Medicine in 1992-93.
Dr. Rapoport has received a number of honors and awards during his career, including the Veterans Administration Research Associate Award, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Career Development Award, the Armour-Van Meter Award and Lecture, the Ingbar Memorial Lecture from the American Thyroid Association and the Pitt-Rivers Lecturer Award of the Joint British Endocrine Society.
Extensively published, Dr. Rapoport has written nearly 240 peer-reviewed or invited articles, books, chapters, editorials and articles in meeting proceedings. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and of Thyroid. He has served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism and as Associate Editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Rapoport has been active in a number of professional societies, including the California Academy of Medicine, American Association of Immunologists and the Northern California Institute for Research and Education. He served as co-organizer and chairman of an NIH workshop, "Automimmune Thyroid Disease," and as co-organizer and session chairman of another NIH workshop, "Gender and Autoimmunity."
Dr. Rapoport received his bachelor's degree from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and a master's degree from the University of Edinburgh. He attended medical school at the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Edinburg, where he earned his medical degree. While at the University of Edinburg Medical School, Dr. Rapoport earned the Conan Doyle Prize. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago and a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Chicago, where he was honored with the Damon Runyon Foundation for Cancer Research Fellowship.
