Specialists at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute were among the first to implant the St. Jude mechanical heart valve, negating the need for a living donor. For patients with end-stage heart failure who are candidates for heart transplantation, the Institute's surgeons may implant the HeartMateŽ left ventricular assist device (LVAD) to manage the mechanical function of the heart's left ventricle, stabilizing the patient and allowing more time and better health while awaiting a heart transplant.

The computer system collects 800 data points for each patient that can be used to predict long- and short-term outcomes and major complications.
