Lung Transplantation

Frequently, chronic lung conditions can cause damage to the heart. Treatment of the underlying lung condition can also improve the heart's ability to function. In some cases, both a heart and a lung transplantation may be needed. Combination heart-lung transplants offer greater risk for infection because the lungs are constantly exposed to the air, which carries germs and bacteria.

Part of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cedars-Sinai's Lung Transplantation Program was founded in 1988. It was the first isolated lung transplant program in the western United States.

Today Cedars-Sinai offers The Lung Center, as well as the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, to provide a full range of screening, diagnostic, therapeutic and management services to those who suffer from chronic lung conditions, including emphysema, asthma and lung cancer.
