At Cedars-Sinai, we encourage patients to participate in clinical research. To make this possible, we are active members of prominent national and international oncology cooperative groups. We have many research trials available for women with ovarian, uterine, cervical and vulvar cancers. In addition, trials are available for patients with pre-invasive disease.
National cooperative groups, pharmaceutical companies and the National Cancer Institute sponsor trial protocols at Cedars-Sinai. These clinical trials feature state-of-the-art therapies, which may include new chemotherapies, multiple therapies (e.g., chemoradiation) and innovative gene-based therapies.
We will also pilot an investigation of a novel blood test as a tumor biomarker in the detection of ovarian cancer. We are one of only eight sites in the United States to offer this.
Our oncology nurses and our clinical nurse specialists provide a multidisciplinary team to care for, educate and support cancer patients and their families. For more information, please call (310) 423-1035.
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has a long-standing research interest in the molecular biology of gynecologic cancers. Our research laboratory aims to develop potential screening devices and novel strategies for therapy. We are particularly focused on the molecular mechanisms of how ovarian cancers develop and disrupt cellular growth.
We continue to investigate the relationship between cigarette smoke and molecular alterations in cervical cancer. These investigations are patient-oriented basic science that we hope can be directly translated to the clinical arena.
We can monitor the success of various treatments over time using our ovarian cancer registry. It links research data with clinical information by individual patient. Over 10 years, we have captured data for more than 500 patients. Complete cancer histories, surgical and chemotherapy treatment records, and follow-up data are included.
Leo D. Lagasse, MD, is Medical Director of Medicine for Humanity, a volunteer, nonprofit organization that brings gynecologic oncology care to women living in Third World countries. They actively provide surgical and medical care, as well lecture and conduct educational seminars with the faculty. Medicine for Humanity's destinations have included the Philippines, South Africa, Mongolia and Nepal. Each of the fellows has found this unique clinical experience educational, inspirational and extremely valuable.
