Lactation Education Center

Congratulations to you and your family on the birth of your baby! We wish you all the joy and happiness that go with caring for your newborn child.

Breastfeeding your baby can be a rewarding experience. Studies show that breast milk provides the best nutrition for your baby. In addition, it offers health benefits that are extremely valuable for infant growth and development.

Most women are able to successfully breastfeed soon after delivery. For some women, however, initial assistance may be needed to get off to the right start. Emotions surrounding the birth of a baby can be overwhelming and confusing. In most instances, breastfeeding becomes enjoyable and problem-free. At Cedars-Sinai we have comprehensive lactation support services to help you.

The Lactation Education Center is adjacent to the Labor and Delivery Suites on the Medical Center's third floor. Our staff will assist you with important information about breastfeeding your baby. We can teach you about many new breastfeeding techniques and other options, such as breast pumping.

The center is staffed with certified lactation consultants staff who have extensive training in maternal and child healthcare. We can use our broad knowledge and experience to begin basic problem solving, either through phone contact or during a private consultation, and to assist your pediatrician with diagnosis and treatment, when necessary.

Basic evaluation and problem solving begins while you are in the hospital. Often it only takes one visit from a lactation consultant to begin satisfying breastfeeding. If more is needed, the lactation consultant will continue to help. In-hospital services include:

  • Assistance with latch-on during the first days of breastfeeding
  • Visits with mothers to answer questions
  • Individual consultations for unusual breastfeeding problems
  • Instruction in the use of specific breastfeeding supplies, including breast pumps
  • Solutions to more complicated breastfeeding problems and concerns

Lactation Education Center services include:

  • Evaluation of breastfeeding
  • Education, prevention and treatment of breastfeeding problems
  • Instructions for concerns regarding increasing mother's breast milk supply, maternal diet and specific allergic conditions
  • Instruction in the use of specific breastfeeding supplies, including breast pumps and the supplemental nursing system, as needed

Breastfeeding Information Hotline

The Breastfeeding Information Hotline is a fully automated phone system that allows you to listen to pre-recorded messages about breastfeeding, infant concerns, pumping your breast milk and other related issues. Dial (800) 972-6003 toll free to access this specially designed program.

To maximize the quantity and quality of information we offer the community, our new fully-automated telephone information system is now available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. By dialing this toll-free service, you can access up to 30 messages related to basic breastfeeding, infant feeding, breast pumping and infant sleeping concerns.

Most parents have found that having access to this kind of information at any hour, day or night, can be extremely valuable. The information available through our info line can mean a world of difference for moms who may be discouraged about breastfeeding.

Should you have problems or need additional encouragement, we are here to assist you. We can visit you in your hospital room, make an appointment or talk with you over the phone. Many difficulties can be solved right over the phone. Please feel free to call the Lactation Education Center's office at (310) 423-5312, or you may visit us on the third floor of the North Tower of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, adjacent to the Maternity Unit.
