Infections in Pregnancy

Our physicians focus on infections that can affect a woman's reproductive system. Our interest in this specialized area makes us unique among Southern California medical centers. We help manage infectious complications of pregnancy, as well as women-specific infectious problems in non-pregnant women.

Some serious infections that are passed from mother to fetus can cause birth defects and other developmental problems. These include cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasmosis, rubella (German measles) and parvovirus ("fifth disease"). Other infections, like herpes or HIV, can affect the timing or route of delivery. Many of these issues require the specialized counseling and evaluation that can be uniquely provided by our maternal-fetal medicine physicians.
