Special Resources

Maternal-fetal medicine physicians give a high level of specialized care to mothers with existing or pregnancy-related diseases and complications.

Cedars-Sinai's Prenatal Diagnosis Center is one of the nation's most advanced centers for prenatal diagnosis and testing. Available tests include:

  • Amniocentesis to detect genetic and congenital problems
  • CVS for earlier diagnosis than amniocentesis provides
  • High resolution ultrasound to view the baby in the uterus
  • Fetal echocardiography to monitor the baby's heart
  • Three-dimensional ultrasound for the best view of potential abnormalities
  • Tay-Sachs screening
  • Canavan disease screening

Our Antenatal Testing Unit performs fetal testing for high-risk mothers who are in our Maternal-Fetal Care Unit prior to delivery.

We want parents to be prepared when their newborn arrives, whether it is the first baby or a brother or sister. We offer classes to help you understand every phase of pregnancy and caring for your baby. No other medical center in the Los Angeles area offers as many childbirth and parenting classes as we do. Even if you are not having your baby at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, you are invited to attend these classes.

Preparation for Childbirth

Pre-Registration
If you are planning your delivery at Cedars-Sinai, you can complete your hospital registration well in advance of your due date. In so doing, you will need only your insurance card and any necessary insurance forms when you arrive. Admission forms are available from your doctor or from the Cedars-Sinai admitting office.

Check-In
When you arrive in labor, please check in at the Emergency Room nursing station. We will take you to the Labor and Delivery Unit.

If you are scheduled for a cesarean delivery, go directly to the Labor and Delivery Unit on the third floor of the North Tower building.

Parking Instructions
Please refer to the parking map for the designated parking areas and structures. Parking is also available at the Beverly Center, just east of the Medical Center.

Parking When in Labor
When you are in labor, please have your driver park in the Emergency Department parking lot (see map).

Parking for Scheduled Cesarean Section
Please have your driver park in the Emergency Department parking lot (see map).

Valet Parking
Valet parking is available in the South Tower parking lot (see map).

Parking Passes
Discounted parking passes can be purchased from the Parking Office by calling (310) 423-5535.

Parking Validation
Free parking is provided for you on the day of admission. Discounted parking is given on the day of discharge. You may come and go within the first 24 hours; however, each ticket will need to be validated at the Third Floor Admission Desk.

When you are discharged, your parking ticket will be validated in the Street Level Discharge Area. If you have parked in South Parking Lot, your parking is free. In any other Cedars-Sinai Medical Center parking lot, a reduced rate will apply.

We encourage you to talk to your physician about the kind of labor and delivery you want. You may want to discuss your medication and anesthesia options, Lamaze or Bradley methods of childbirth, fetal monitoring during labor and positions for delivery. This is a time to decide if you want family or friends with you during the labor and delivery. You can also decide who will cut the umbilical cord - you, the father, the coach or the doctor.

Your Labor and Delivery Plan
Detailed planning helps the doctor and reduces your anxiety about the birth of your child, even though unexpected situations may change your plans. Be sure to share your plan with the nurse during the early part of labor so she can establish the best possible environment for you and those who will attend the birth.

At Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, you will be given the most advanced care available in maternity services. Most deliveries are without complications, but in the rare situation in which a problem occurs, enhanced care is available.

After the Baby Arrives
After delivery, you will be moved to a comfortable, private room. A nurse will take over care for both you and your baby. This is called "couplet care," and it ensures that your needs will be met. Your baby may stay in the room with you as much as you want, but if you want to rest, your baby can stay in the nursery.
