A State-of-the-Art Blood Donor Center

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is consistently ranked highly in consumer surveys of Southern California hospitals. Cedars-Sinai patients benefit from the best overall quality of care, the best doctors and nurses and the most personalized care.

The Medical Center's staff takes pride in being an integral part of the community and realizes that this success relies strongly on community participation. With the active Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center, Transplant Services and Emergency Department treating hundreds of patients, blood products are always in demand. Many of the newer medical and surgical therapies rely on blood transfusion support and would not be possible without community donations.

Despite efforts to educate the community, only three percent of eligible donors in Los Angeles give blood regularly, the lowest rate of any major city. As the need for blood products is always great, the demand often exceeds supplies, and it is a challenge to continuously meet the needs of our patients. Cedars-Sinai is most fortunate to be able to count on the community for support of its blood collection goals.

As a member of our community, you can help. Your donation of blood or platelets can give the gift of life. This gift can come only from people like you, who take the time to give so generously of themselves. Blood donation is a safe and simple procedure and only takes a short time out of your day. Please help save lives by donating blood or platelets at the Rita and Taft Schreiber Blood Donor Facility, located in the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, South Tower, Street level, Room 1690. With your blood donation, Cedars-Sinai can continue to provide the community with the highest quality of care.

Are You Eligible to Donate?

Donor eligibility criteria are governed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are continuously updated. Therefore, each donor is carefully screened prior to each collection by an individual qualified to evaluate donor eligibility.

Blood donors must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Currently be in good health (not suffering from any infection)
  • Never have had hepatitis
Some common reasons for a temporary deferral include:
  • Recent dental procedure or minor surgery (less than 72 hours)
  • Piercing or tattoo (within the past year)
  • Travel to a malaria-endemic area (within the past year)
  • Pregnancy (delivery within 6 weeks)
  • Taking Acutane, Proscar or Propecia medications
Platelet donors cannot take aspirin or aspirin-containing medications two days prior to donation.
