Shirley Ann Russ, MD MPH is a pediatrician at Pediatric Services at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Dr. Russ' main research interests are the epidemiology of childhood hearing loss, newborn hearing screening, and improving systems of care for young children. Her recent work has focused on the translation of evidence into practice for the benefit of young children's health and development.
Dr. Russ analyzed data from the National Survey of Children's Health to produce a national chartbook on patterns of early reading to young children by state. She is a member of the design team for the second National Survey of Early Childhood Health, and recently co-authored an article on the influence of multiple social risks in children's health that was published in the journal Pediatrics. She was a co-investigator in the implementation and evaluation of the Victorian Infant Hearing Screening Program, a statewide program in Australia that introduced newborn hearing screening for babies with a risk factor for hearing loss together with behavioral screening for not-at risk babies. Other research projects include work with the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation, the Children and Families Commission of Orange County, California, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation/California Wellness Foundation, and the United Kingdom's MRC Hearing and Communication Group at the University of Manchester.
Dr. Russ has published numerous research papers in peer-reviewed journals and is a much sought after speaker, instructor and presenter at national and international conferences. She chaired an invitational workshop for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality on Accelerating Evidence into Practice for the Benefit of Children with Early Hearing Loss and was the Primary Care Chair for the NICHQ (National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality) National Learning Collaborative on Improving Systems of Care for Children with Special Healthcare Needs.
She is currently a member of several organizations including the International Consortium of Early Childhood Services, the American Pediatric Association Research Committee, the California Children's Services State Strategic Planning Group, and other committees and societies related to childhood illness.
After graduating from Liverpool University in England with a bachelor's of science joint honors degree in medical cell biology and biochemistry, Dr. Russ earned her medical degree with honors at the University's medical school. She followed her medical degree with a Master's of Public Health from Monash University's Medical School in Melbourne. After earning her master's, she went on to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree (a research degree by thesis comparable in scope to a research doctorate in the United States) from Melbourne University. She performed her internship and residency at the Royal Liverpool Hospital in England followed by two additional residencies at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool and Bristol Maternity Hospital.
