Medical Center is Recognized for Higher Standard of Stroke Care

The American Stroke Association has awarded Cedars-Sinai with its "Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award." The award, which was presented recently at the International Stroke Conference 2008 in New Orleans, recognizes Cedars-Sinai's success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care for at least 24 months.

Great Debates in Clinical Medicine Set for April 3

The 5th Annual Dr. Leon Morgenstern Great Debates in Clinical Medicine Resident Competition will be held on Thursday, April 3, in the ECC beginning at 8 a.m. Plan to arrive on time, as seating is limited for this popular event. Cedars-Sinai Study Shows Gene Therapy Approach "Trains" Immune System to Destroy Brain Cancer Cells

A new gene therapy approach that attracts and "trains" immune system cells to destroy deadly brain cancer cells also provides long-term immunity, produces no significant adverse effects and -- in the process of destroying the tumor -- promotes the return of normal brain function and behavioral skills, according to a study conducted by researchers at Cedars-Sinai's Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics Research Institute.
Engineered viruses can deliver therapies to the brain for treatment of cancer or neurodegenerative diseases. The brain cells carrying the viruses with the therapeutic genes can be seen (pictured above) in green.

New Strategy Cracks Staph Bacterium's "Golden Armor"

A team of researchers, including staff at Cedars-Sinai, has exploited a structural vulnerability in Staphylococcus aureus that in laboratory experiments and a mouse study opened the "superbug" to treatment with an anti-cholesterol medication.
