The medical staff has elected Norman Schulman, M.D., as the next Vice Chief of Staff. Dr. Schulman currently serves as treasurer of the medical staff and Clinical Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He will assume his new role on Jan. 1, 2008.

Marketing of Trasylol (Aprotinin Injection) Suspended

The FDA has announced that, at the agency's request, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp. has agreed to a marketing suspension of Trasylol (aprotinin injection), a drug used to control bleeding during heart surgery, pending detailed review of preliminary results from a Canadian study that suggested an increased risk for death.

Save Telephone Orders for Outside the Hospital & Verbal Orders for Emergencies

The Joint Commission now requires that all telephone orders be verified by a physician within 48 hours. This Joint Commission requirement applies to ALL orders, in addition to medication.

"Physicians need to physically sign the patient's chart or sign it on Web/VS with their electronic signature within the 48-hour period," says Robert M. (Matt) Bernstein, M.D., who serves with Michael D. Borookhim, M.D., and Rajeev Rao, M.D., as members of the medical staff Leadership Development Committee that oversees this issue.

After dealing with heart disease for 30 years, Howard Kaplowitz, 71, was delighted to become Cedars-Sinai's 500th heart transplant patient on October 18. Following a smooth recovery, Kaplowitz was discharged from the medical center earlier this week.
