Message from the Chief of Staff

The charge of the medical staff is to ensure that the highest level of quality and safety is provided to our patients in the medical center. Medical staff governance is a crucial element in providing support for our physicians, allowing them to attain this goal. The opportunity to participate in the governance process through our elections of physician leadership is an invaluable way to ensure that we accomplish our mission. In addition, your participation helps to shape future direction for us as a medical staff and for the care of our patients.

In this special edition of Pulse, the candidates for Vice Chief of Staff, Drs. Marshal Fichman and Norman Schulman, have provided platform statements in an effort to let medical staff voters have a perspective and understanding of their vision and goals for the medical staff. This is an opportunity for those who may not know the candidates personally to gain valuable insight on the important issues and on the philosophy these individuals have.

We thank Drs. Fichman and Schulman for volunteering to run. Each has years of service to the medical staff, the institution and their patients. I hope that our medical staff takes advantage of the election process and votes.

I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to seek election to the office of Vice Chief of Staff of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. My background qualifications for this position include:

1. Four terms as Clinical Chief of Nephrology.
2. Eight terms as Member of the Medical Executive Committee.
3. Membership in other medical staff committees, including the Medical Advisory Committee and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
   
4. Chairmanship of the Dialysis Committee of the Department of Medicine.
5. Development of a teaching program in Fluid and Electrolytes.
6. Several decades of close affiliation and activities with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
7. Member of Metabolic Support Team.

Norman Schulman, M.D.

Dear Friend and Colleague,

Soon you will be voting for the next Vice Chief of Staff. I would appreciate it if you would take a moment of your valuable time to consider my candidacy.

Currently I am in my second term both as Treasurer of the Medical Staff and as Clinical Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology. While it has been an honor to serve you in these positions, it has also been an opportunity for me to gain a wealth of knowledge, experience and training. Since joining the staff of Cedars-Sinai in 1974, I have served on most of the different Medical Staff committees, including multiple terms on the Medical Executive Committee. I have taken an active role while co-chairing the Clinical Resource Committee in a number of different initiatives and discussions. Additionally, I have been instrumental in increasing the representation among voluntary attending staff on this committee.
