Total body irradiation (TBI) is given to patients before a stem cell transplant and covers the entire body. It used in combination with chemotherapy to destroy diseased bone marrow cells, cancer cells that may be hidden in the central nervous system, or testes. It may also be used to suppress or lower a patient's immune system so new bone marrow can regrow.
This is an inpatient procedure.
