Low Dose-Rate (LDR) Radiation Implant/Brachytherapy

Low Dose-Rate (LDR) Radiation Implant/Brachytherapy uses seed implants (internal radiation) that are placed directly into or near the tumor. LDR may be used for chest, pelvic and prostate tumors and can sometimes be used for patients with cervical or uterine cancers. It is often given after a course of extended radiation. For some patients, LDR may be used instead of external beam radiation or as an extra dose (boost).

Though LDR is an inpatient procedure, recovery time is shorter when compared to conventional cancer surgery. Depending on where the cancer is, the seed implant may be placed for a short-term or permanently.
