High Dose-Rate (HDR) Radiation Implant / Brachytherapy for Women's Cancers (Cylinder)

High Dose-Rate (HDR) Radiation Implant/Brachytherapy may be used in the treatment of women with cancer of the cervix, vagina or uterus.

HDR provides a high dose of radiation that uses a cylinder to put a radioactive source directly into or close to the tumor, sparing healthy tissue nearby. It may also be used as an extra dose (boost) to give high amounts of radiation to a tumor.

HDR is done as an outpatient procedure, one hour a week for three to four weeks in contrast to Low Dose-Rate (LDR) Radiation Implant which requires a three to four day inpatient stay for each treatment.
