Surasak Phuphanich, MD, FAAN

Director, Neuro-Oncology Program
Department of Neurosurgery and Division of Neurology

Surasak Phuphanich, MD, FAAN holds a dual appointment as Director of the Neuro-Oncology Program in the Department of Neurosurgery and Division of Neurology in the Department of Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. A Diplomate of the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry, he is board certified in neurology with sub-specialty training in neuro-oncology and has more than 20 years of experience in this field for translational clinical research.

Dr. Phuphanich's clinical and research interests are drug discovery and delivery with a focus on promising new targeted therapeutic agents. Using monoclonal antibodies, gene therapy and immunotherapy for different specific cancer cell targets, he seeks to use various cancers' proteinomic and genomic profiles to develop patient-specific treatments for cancer.

Dr. Phuphanich has written articles for more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, and presented talks at more than 100 national and international meetings. He also served on the editorial board for the American Journal of Oncology and Current Cancer Therapy Reviews and has been an ad hoc reviewer for such prestigious journals as the Journal of Neuro-Oncology, Neuro-Oncology, Journal of Neuroimaging, Cancer, Cancer Investigation, Journal of the Moffitt Cancer Center, and the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. In 2006 and 2007, he was named one of America's Top Doctors for Cancer (Castle Connelly Medical Ltd). He has received the American Physicians Award from the Consumer Research Council. He was a recipient of the Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Clinical Investigator Professorial Award from 2003 to 2007 and in their July 2007 issue, Atlanta Magazine included him in the Top Doctors.

Before coming to Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Phuphanich was a professor of Hematology-Oncology, Clinical Program Leader/Neuro-Oncology, co-Principle Investigator at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University. He was a founding physician and program leader at the Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute-NCI Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida.

Dr. Phuphanich completed his neurology residency at the University of Illinois Hospital, Chicago and his clinical research fellowship in neuro-oncology at the Brain Tumor Research Center, Department of Neurosurgery, University of California, San Francisco.
