Comprehensive Care for People with Lung Cancer

Lung cancer cancer is the number one killer among cancers in both men and women. It accounts for one-third of all cancer-related deaths in the United States.

The Women's Guild Lung Institute at Cedars-Sinai treats both small cell lung cancer (including oat cell carcinoma) and non-small cell lung cancer, including adenocarcinoma and squamous cell and large cell cancer.

The thoracic surgeons at Cedars-Sinai have been pioneers in developing minimally invasive surgery to treat lung cancer. The Women's Guild Lung Institute at Cedars-Sinai offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for diseases of the lung, esophagus, chest wall, airways and mediastinum.

Our highly responsive multidisciplinary staff is dedicated to providing information, quality care and serve to all who seek our care and counsel.

An Expert Team for Comprehensive Care

The Women's Guild Lung Institute provides care using a multi-disciplinary team of specialists under the leadership of Zab Mosenifar, MD, Medical Director; Robert J. McKenna, Jr., MD, Surgical Director for the Center and Medical Director for Thoracic Surgery and Trauma; George Chaux, MD, Medical Director of the Lung Transplant Program and Wen Cheng, MD, Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant Program.

Cedars-Sinai offers state-of-the-art treatment for all
stages of lung cancer, including investigational studies involving new treatments that are not otherwise available.

A highly integrated team approach to treating patients is an integral part of our program. Multimodality therapy is often required, and the surgeons, pulmonary specialists, oncologists and radiation therapy specialists work together to formulate the best treatment plan for each patient. We are dedicated to providing the most up-to-date and compassionate care for our patients.

In addition to surgery that removes all or a part of a lung, the Women's Guild Lung Institute also offers:

  • Minimally invasive lung cancer surgery assisted by video technology. Cedars-Sinai is proud to be one of the few institutions in the world capable of offering patients complete lung cancer operations via minimally invasive surgery, which results in less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery than traditional, invasive, rib-spreading operations.

Our thoracic surgeons have performed more than 1,400 lung cancer operations with this approach since 1992. We recently published the case follow-up, which demonstrated that the procedure is as effective as the more invasive approach.

  • Chemotherapy. This can be done before an operation to shrink a cancer or after surgery to prevent the cancer from coming back or instead of surgery if an operation is not viable for the patient. Chemotherapy is provided at the Outpatient Cancer Center.
  • Radiation therapy, which like chemotherapy can be done before, after or instead of lung surgery. Radiation therapy is also offered at the Outpatient Cancer Center.
