Moise Danielpour, MD

Director, Pediatric Neurosurgery Program

Moise Danielpour, MD is Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He specializes in treating pediatric brain tumors, as well as a multitude of other nervous system disorders, including congenital malformations, epilepsy, craniofacial disorders and hydrocephalus. Dr. Danielpour is one of the few pediatric neurosurgeons in the world who has experience with in utero surgical treatment for birth defects, such as myelomeningocele. He is also an expert in the use of minimally invasive surgical technology in the care of children with central nervous system disease.

His commitment to advancement of medical knowledge and science has led to collaborations with several NIH-supported basic scientists. His current research interest include gene therapy for the treatment of malignant pediatric brain tumors in collaboration with Dr. Pedro Lowenstein and Dr. Maria Castro at the Gene Therapeutics Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Additionally, he is a co-investigator on a clinical trial on dendritic cell immune vaccination for malignant brain tumors in children being conducted at the Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute.

Given his level of expertise and interest in the use of minimally invasive surgical technology, he is also collaborating with Dr. Daniel Farkas, Director of Surgical Imaging Laboratories and Vice Chairman for Research in the Department of Surgery. These projects include developing a stearable stereotactic guided therapeutic micro laser and an intraoperative diagnostic laser spectroscopy.

Dr. Danielpour's past scientific achievements include co-writing the NIH-funded multi-center RO1 grant for a clinical trial of in utero surgical closure of myelomeningocele defect, which is ongoing at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, as well as the development of a noninvasive intracranial pressure monitor at Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Danielpour has performed research at the Molecular Biology Institute and the Marion Davies Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition, he served as an American Heart Association student research fellow in the Department of Neurosurgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where he studied the impact of antioncogenes on the growth and differentiation of neuronal cell lines. He has been published in professional journals.

As a clinician, he actively and enthusiastically participates in the care of his patients and education of residents. Dr. Danielpour is Co-Director of the Craniofacial Clinic, and he is a member of several multidisciplinary clinical treatment teams working to deliver the best care possible for pediatric patients. One of the results of this collaboration has been that Cedars-Sinai is considered one of the preferred centers for the surgical care of children with dwarfing conditions. Another result of his work has been the creation of a new multidisciplinary center for head and neck surgery and craniofacial reconstruction at Cedars-Sinai.

On the national level, he is known as a neurosurgeon with a passion for the care of children. He looks for ways to improve care for children around the world, and as such has worked with children's charities on an international level. He last traveled to Guatemala with the "Healing the Children" foundation were he operated on twenty children with complex neurosurgical problems.

Dr. Danielpour received his bachelor's degree in biology and psychology, becoming a member of the Golden Key National Honors Society and earning the department's highest honors with distinction in research. He received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, were he worked in a laboratory with Dr. Matthew Scharff, a prominent immunologist and member of the National Academy of Sciences. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he served as Chief Resident and Instructor. Dr. Danielpour completed his training with Dr. Warwick Peacock in San Francisco, serving as a clinical instructor of pediatric neurosurgery at the joint Stanford-University of California, San Francisco Medical Centers.
